What do you get when you take a Dave Batista’s Stuber, introduce him to the Charlie’s Angels Drew Barrymore, add Orphan Annie and friends (without the cute signing and crap), mix in the Taliban, and then throw in Desert Storm’s Oliver North? Barry Kirwan’s book, “When the Children Come.”
Synopsis
Nathan, emotionally scarred after three tours in Afghanistan, lives alone in Manhattan until New Year’s Eve, when he meets Lara. The next morning, he notices that something odd is going on – a terrified kid is being pursued by his father, and a young girl, Sally, pleads with Nathan to hide her from her parents. There is no internet, no television, no phone coverage.
Nathan, Lara and Sally flee along the East Coast, encountering madmen, terrorists, the armed forces, and other children frightened for their lives. The only thing Nathan knows for sure is that he must not fall asleep…
The Review
This was such a great book! It was all woven together like grandma’s home-made apple pie! It had a little bit of cinnamon, the perfect amount of flour, just the right amount of apples, and an egg! That is if cinnamon was a love story, flour was awesome characters, apples were a truckload action, and an egg was a nicely rounded plot!
I totally could see this book made into a movie! As you can see, I have already picked out the leading actors! I mean, who wouldn’t want to see a movie with Dave Batista, Drew Barrymore? Maybe replace Orphan Annie and Oliver North with younger versions, and leave out the real Yes, yes, you’re welcome!
I liked how the book flowed location wise and how the characters moved around their world. City, rebel camps, the ocean, and… (well, you will need to read it to see where they all end up, no spoilers, man!) I had no problem following it, and I swear, the words “What the Hell is going on?” never slipped past my lips! Although, at times, the characters more than likely thinking it!
The nemesis in this book, well, totally awesome! Without saying much, no wonder you wouldn’t want to fall asleep around them! Vague? Well, yes, thank you.
Another great thing about this book was how it started out as a mystery, turned into suspense, and then finished with action and adventure. Very appealing and satisfying!
So in recap, here’s what we have in this book:
- An action-packed movie-worthy plot
- Sleep-deprived interesting characters
- An out of this world “society” of ruthless nemesis
- Grandma’s Apple Pie
