1st, 2nd, and 3rd Parts of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Ah yes, here I go again with another rant, self-improvement, message to you or something that sounds like it! I actually don’t’ know what the hell to call it!

I do know one thing though, it’s about me, and about unravelling what the hell is going on in my head right now. Curious see what is going on?

Still here? Good, please stay with me a few minutes folks, and maybe you too will get something out of my post. (HELL YA! See that! I just solved my last sentence issue of not knowing what to this entry into my blog. It’s a post..damn…how smart! Great name!) Or maybe you won’t, and just see it as a confusing rant.

Now anyways, this weekend my brain did a spin, a flip, a flop, wiped out, and finally landed on a partial self-self revelation. (I don’t it totally sorted yet, but by the end of this post hopefully, I will!)

So what’s going on? What’s wrong Topher? What brought this is on you might ask? If you didn’t ask, or don’t care, it’s ok, I asked for you.

1. First, when I was out with a friend we were talking about a bunch of stuff when the topic of work came up.

2. The second thing was that I watched the Bohemian Rhapsody movie twice. Yes, that’s right, I watched the movie, not once, but twice.

Ok, I have two things here, and they are not related at all. Or are they?

In this hand, work, repetitive, tedious, and stressful. The second, the story of rock and roll band with a flamboyant frontman!

Now let me try and sort this out. Still here? Good.

Currently, work. It’s actually ok. I go, I get paid, I’m not perfect at it, but I’m not totally horrible at it either. I have the opportunity to make circumstances happen there, not to mention to “grow” by doing courses there if I want. Classes that will help me get better at my job and excel. I guess it’s a win-win. I get some education, and the man gets a smarter lemming.

Sounds like a great opportunity right? Well, I haven’t yet taken the occasion to do this. It has crossed my mind every day though. Thinking, only if I knew this, or that, and if I took a course I would be better off. Life would probably be a bit easier!

The issue, with the courses and following through with them is that I didn’t know where to start! I needed a mentor, guidance from someone, a clue, anything! Something that I currently don’t have at work. Let’s call it, working for somebody that doesn’t really know how my role functions.

Lucky for me my friend is in the similar type of work as me and randomly told me that he wanted to take a course at such and such a place in a topic that would definitely help me out. Weird or coincidental? Not sure, but it was and is excellent news for me!

So that was the first thing.

Now onto the second. I saw the new movie Bohemian Rhapsody. I absolutely loved it. I know many people didn’t, and maybe I’m reading too much into it. There’s a good chance I am. I still can’t get the movie out of my head.

I didn’t look at the movie as a movie about a guy and a band, with them getting famous, the singer gets sick and dies.

I looked at the movie totally differently.

Freddie Mercury wanted to be a performer. I got the impression that he looked at the big picture and when opportunity knocked he went after it. He came across a band, he approached it and did what he had to show them he had the chops to get the gig. Later, he wanted to make a record. He talked the band into selling the van, took the money, and they created a record. Ya, I know the movie made it look easy, but the main point is that the lead singer looked at the big picture, and then zoomed in on the tasks that got shit done.

So how are these two things related?

Well, with the first issue, I have the opportunity to take something and make it mine. I wouldn’t say that it’s taking something that is my passion and turning a dream into a reality, but it’s taking something offered to me and making it into something bigger and better for myself. Just like in the movie, something comes along, Freddie grabbed it and made it into something bigger.

Now that we got the connection, it still doesn’t help me not be bothered and confused.

This is where I am going to take the first three steps in the book of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and try and relate it to my life. Say what? What a twisty nerdy thing to do!

At this point my friends, if you are still actually reading this, are just along for the ride at this point as I feel some rambling coming on!

First of all, if you don’t know what these seven steps are, check out this youtube video. It will help explain what he in the world I’m talking about if you are not familiar with this.

Soooo here we go!

Habit 1

Be Pro-active instead of Re-active.

Right now at work, I have many things that I am not in control of that definitely affect me.

So, what do I do? Should I sit around and grumble and be reactive and complain when things happen that I can’t deal with right at work because I don’t have the training? Obviously, not. Do I know how to deal with the current arising situation? No. Could I get training for it? You bet your ass I can. Will this help me out, hell ya. So right away, you can see that being proactive is way better than being reactive in this case.

Great right? I only have one issue, and that would be the motivation part! Currently, I have the drive to do it, but you know what? If I lose the spark, the motivated rockstar I am will crash and burn!

With that, it looks like habit one is solved.

Habit 2

This is where it gets sticky. Looking into the future, I can see the reality of the situation. I can set myself up 5 or 10-year goals. Possibly, 20, definitely not 30.

I can see my employer selling his company, and if I don’t have more training to fall back on, I will fall on my face when going through the door on my last day. The violins will start to play, the tears will come, and I will be going down to the grocery store asking for a box big enough to live in.

Habit 2 asks, what are your dreams? What do you want to do more than anything in the world? What do you offer the world?

My answer. I don’t’ know, and I’m too old to start now.

Don’t get me wrong, I use to have dreams when I was younger of being something other than a 9-5 worker in cubical heaven, but I’m pretty sure my window of opportunity has passed. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I’m not going to keep my hopes up!

On the other hand, I do have the opportunity to work towards goals in my current occupation. Not all is lost, right?

See, that’s where I’m all f’d up. I know, or at least feel, that I’m not too old to do something with my current stage in life of running away and following my dreams. So how can habit 2 work?

When I was a kid, I had many dreams of being a performer, an actor, or even a promoter of events where people go to something that I have promoted and leave with smiles on their face.

Those days are gone, and I got what I got.

Another thing with habit 3 that has me is from the video and the example with Will Smith. He said his purpose is in life is to bring smiles to peoples faces. Well, that’s great WILLY! But not too damn hard when you are already a star amigo. Maybe it was just a bad example.

The longer I think about it, the longer I feel that I need to take the current opportunity and run with it. Then after things are going the right way, figure out what my passion is, if I even have one. (If such thing as “your passion” also exist), and then at that point work on a side hustle.

I’m not going to lie, I still think the chances are slim that a passion can be found in this lifetime.

You do have the odd example though. Look at Kendrick Kang-Joh Jeong. He was a doctor, then became an actor. I know acting isn’t something I want to do, I was only using it as an example. He also started to act at a younger stage in his life. Yep, younger by a few years than I am now.

So yea, with that, as you can see Step 2 is half worked out. Can I do good at what I’m currently doing, YES! Will I ever figure out my passion in life, and become well successful at it so people will know my name? Well, probably not.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong!

Habit 3

Put first things first.

Essentially at this point. I have to figure out what is important to me.

What is the most important thing in my life right now? Focus on things that really matter and on things that will get you where you want to be in life.

How do you figure that out? That is where you can use a weekly 4 quadrant planner. Errr.. a what? How about a Time Management Matrix? Does that clear it up? No?

OK then, I suggest if you really want to know that you watch this video.

Do you understand what you do with the planner? Put must of you focus on quadrant 2.

It looks like if I want to take the bull by the balls, or is it the horns? What end it is? Anyways, if I want to do anything with the furry beast, I need to start focusing on things that matter.

Now, this just doesn’t relate only to work, but also other areas of life like health or physical activity, relationships with family and friends, spiritual practices like meditation or church, and cognitive health and that is reading and learning new things.

Then at this point, if you got your priorities figured out you then have to schedule your work. In the below video it describes how to do just that. I know the video looks like a cult advertisement, but it’s not. It’s just old.

My Conclusion.

I know, I know, I was all over the place, and I turned my post from me to you, but I do have things figured out a bit clearer now.

I feel what it sums down to is work with what I got. Sure, big dreams of making a difference are great, but right now take care and appreciate the opportunities I already have in my life. Don’t worry about trivial things in life like blog views, the weather, or anything else I can’t change. Work on skills to make my life better, relationships, look after myself and do activities that really matter to me. Who knows what might come up, right?

  1. Wow! That was one hell of a post. I pictured you standing on a soapbox on a street corner as I read it😜 Always wanted to read that book but never got around to it maybe I’ll check it out this coming week.


  2. It’s never too late. I started writing when I retired from the 9-5 grind. I have 7 books published and an 8 nearly ready. Find what you really want to do and go for it.
